Physical Exams Q & A

What are physical exams?

Physical exams involve medical care in which your Omni-Med Family Care & Urgent Care provider examines your body to evaluate your overall health and wellness.

Routine annual physical exams help your provider detect and manage symptoms of an illness or disease to prevent serious complications from occurring.

What happens during a physical exam?

What you can expect during an annual physical exam is different for men, women, and children, but it often includes the following components:

Medical history review

Your Omni-Med Family Care & Urgent Care specialist weighs you, checks your blood pressure and other vital signs, and reviews your medical history. They also discuss symptoms you may have and answer questions about your health.

Physical examination

Your doctor completes a comprehensive physical examination by evaluating your eyes, nose, ears, throat, breathing, abdomen, reflexes, and heartbeat. In women, they offer a pelvic exam, including a Pap test to screen for cervical cancer and other gynecological problems. In children, your physician evaluates growth and development.

Screening and diagnosis

After examining you, your Omni-Med Family Care & Urgent Care provider might complete screening tests for high cholesterol, hormone imbalance, STDs, asthma, allergies, high blood sugar, and other acute or chronic illnesses. They may use blood tests, urine tests, X-rays, or other diagnostic imaging procedures.

Treatment

Your personalized treatment plan at Omni-Med Family Care & Urgent Care depends on which disease or illness you have, if any, and your disease risk factors.

Your doctor may recommend no treatment if you’re healthy, further diagnostic testing, lifestyle changes, medications, alternative treatments, or minor surgical procedures. They also offer vaccines and refer you to a specialist if necessary for complex medical problems.

How often should I schedule a physical exam?

Schedule an annual physical exam every year or more often if your doctor recommends it to manage an illness or disease.

The Omni-Med Family Care & Urgent Care team also offers employee physicals with drug screens, Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals, and school and sports physical exams.

Don’t neglect your health, as early detection and treatment of medical problems helps you avoid serious or life-threatening emergencies. Schedule your next annual physical exam over the phone or online with Omni-Med Family Care & Urgent Care today.
